Gum Incorporated’s 1940 Play Ball series consists of 240 cards, each 2-1/2” by 3-1/8”. The 1940 set was similar in design to its 1939 predecessor, though the manufacturer added name captions, borders, and a tiny bat-and-glove graphic to its crisp black-and-white motif. Included in this issue are such stars of the day as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, but also past diamond legends Shoeless Joe Jackson, Nap Lajoie, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Tris Speaker and Walter Johnson.
